A standard part of all regular checkups is an oral exam. During an exam, Dr. Lindsey will look for signs of gum disease, tooth decay, bruxism, and TMJ-dysfunction. Some things, though, are harder to see with the naked eye. That’s why our Ft. Collins office utilizes VELscope. With VELscope, it’s possible for us to see your smile in a new way—literally—helping us to diagnose a range conditions like oral cancer, as well as viral, fungal, and bacterial infections, plus inflammation and salivary gland tumors.
How Does VELscope Work?
VELscope is a light, handheld tool. It emits no radiation and uses no rinses or dyes. Instead, it uses a simple fluorescent light to help Dr. Lindsey spot and diagnose areas of concern. The fluorescent light produced by VELscope causes healthy tissue in the mouth to glow green, while areas that may need attention will look dark in comparison. In total, it takes about two minutes to complete a thorough exam with VELscope. Then, once we know what areas need attention, Dr. Lindsey can immediately start planning exactly the care you need to help you support your oral and overall health.
