A Healthy Smile In Just Two Annual Visits

A smiling dental patient

At Aspen Dental Care, our goal is to help our patients achieve great oral health with as little dental work as possible. That’s why we recommend that everyone come in for checkups and cleanings twice a year. These visits are kind of like “tune-ups” for your teeth and gums and can help you minimize more extensive dental work down the road. Not to mention that they help your smile look its best! If it’s been a while since you’ve seen a dentist in Ft. Collins and you’d like to schedule a visit, give us a call today.

Why Are Checkups and Cleanings Necessary?

Many people say, “If I’m not in pain, why do I need to see the dentist?” The answer is simple: prevention. Checkups are designed for Dr. Lindsey and Dr. Zimm to monitor your teeth and gums and detect problems early on, before they cause pain. This way, they can either prevent them from progressing altogether or treat them with small, simple procedures like dental fillings. Along with a few good habits at home, regular checkups can often prevent the need for more involved treatments like dental crowns, root canals, and extractions.

Professional cleanings are essential for removing the plaque and tartar that you can’t remove at home, even with good brushing and flossing habits. Our caring hygienists are very gentle, but thorough at the same time, and will help your smile stay much healthier with just two cleanings a year (more often for patients with gum disease).

What Will Your Cleaning Be Like?

First, we’ll ask you whether you have any particular questions, concerns, or requests. And since our goal is to make sure you’re comfortable from start to finish, we’ll check in periodically to see that you’re doing well. Then, using either hand instruments or a power tool called an ultrasonic scaler, we’ll remove the hard deposits of tartar from your teeth and under your gumline.

Then, to help your teeth look and feel great, we’ll polish and floss so that they’re slick and smooth. Finally, we’ll give you oral hygiene tips that are tailored just for you to help you maintain everything at home.

Dr. Lindsey and Dr. Zimm are very thorough because they want to make sure that every aspect of your oral health is in great shape. Here are the basic steps you can expect during a checkup:

  • A review of your medical history
  • An oral cancer screening (these visual exams take just minutes and are done by both the dentist and hygienist)
  • Routine, diagnostic X-rays (usually once per year)
  • A TMJ evaluation
  • An annual gum exam to find gum disease as soon as possible
  • A dental exam where we look at all of your teeth and existing dental work. If we find any issues that need to be treated, we’ll discuss our recommendations and answer any questions you have.
