Regular oral hygiene is vital to keeping a healthy and happy mouth—brushing, flossing, and rinsing with a mouthwash are all important steps that contribute to your mouth’s protection. But despite your best efforts, your teeth are still susceptible to decay; particularly your molars, as their grooves can easily trap debris and food particles. However, dental sealants provide a great solution to help cover these areas and prevent the risk of cavities! Keep reading to learn more about how this treatment is beneficial, even for adults.
What Are Dental Sealants?
Dental sealants are thin coatings of plastic placed along the chewing surfaces of teeth, primarily the premolars and molars, as they are more susceptible to debris and less detectable food particles. The sealants are bonded into the depressions and grooves of the teeth, where they act as a protective shield over the enamel of each tooth.
How Are Dental Sealants Beneficial for Adults?
Even though this treatment is often associated with pediatric dentistry, it’s still a viable option for adults. Some of the benefits that sealants can offer include:
- They reduce the risk of tooth decay – If you practice good hygiene, your sealants can last up to 10 years, which is 10 years of added protection against tooth decay! Just be sure to regularly visit your dentist for checkups to ensure they remain intact.
- They help to prevent cavities – If early signs of tooth decay are present, a sealant can be applied to prevent the formation of cavities. Since sealants are typically clear, your dentist will be able to monitor the tooth and ensure the sealant is working properly.
- They enhance the appearance of your smile – Since sealants make your cleaning routine a little easier, they in turn help to enhance the way your smile looks. Less bacteria in your mouth means less plaque buildup and discoloration.
- They combat aging – Your enamel tends to wear down over the years, in addition to the biochemistry of your mouth changing throughout your life. This increases the risk of an oral health problem developing—but sealants can help combat some of these issues by enhancing and protecting your teeth.
Being an adult does not disqualify you from receiving dental sealants; they’re an effective solution for all ages! Ask your dentist if you think dental sealants could enhance and improve the quality of your oral health.
