The first and foremost obligation of a family dentist is the prevention of dental problems in the first place. Doing so helps you—the patient—avoid bigger problems and costlier bills further down the road. With this in mind, Dr. Shiloh Lindsey and her staff at Aspen Dental Care in Fort Collins, CO, would like to see you and each member of your family every six months for dental checkups. Not only is this in keeping with the recommendation of the American Dental Association, this regularity allows us to carefully monitor your oral health and notice any concerning changes.
Dental Checkups for Healthy Teeth and Gums
When you or a family member comes to Aspen Dental Care for a checkup—and Dr. Lindsey would like to start seeing the youngest in your family around the time when they turn two years old—we will, of course, clean your teeth and remove any plaque buildup. Beyond that, we will closely examine each tooth for any symptoms of decay and when necessary, we’ll take digital x-rays to find imperceptible spots of decay as well as possible infection below the gum line. We’ll also carefully evaluate the health of your gums and check for any of the early signs of gum disease.
If we do find any problems, then we will explain what needs to be done to solve the problem, so you understand the treatment that is required to restore your oral health. For example, in the case of gum disease, we may recommend scaling to remove tartar from below the gum line, root planing to smooth rough root surfaces where plaque can more easily adhere, and if infection is present, then we’ll apply a topical antibiotic treatment. We can repair a cavity with a tooth-colored filling or we’ll restore function to a cracked or severely decayed tooth with a porcelain crown, inlay or onlay.
