Children’s Dentistry in Aspen, CO
February 20, 2015
Is there anything more special than your child’s smile? Well, yes—knowing that smile is healthy, too. And there’s no better month than February to make sure all of your children’s teeth are as healthy as they can be. The American Dental Association has named February National Children’s Dental Health Month. And while this may be the month that is officially devoted to kids’ teeth, Dr. Shiloh Lindsey and the team at Aspen Dental Care in Ft. Collins, CO, take your children’s dental health seriously every day of the year.
Children’s Dentistry at Home
Actually, children’s dentistry begins at home with you, the parent. Just as soon as you see those first baby teeth appear, it’s time to start taking care of your children’s dental health. After feeding, use a soft cloth dampened with warm water and wipe your children’s baby teeth and gums. Then, as more teeth erupt and their smiles develop, use a soft toothbrush and a small amount of toothpaste to brush their teeth. As they mature, you can teach them to brush their own teeth. And to make sure they know brushing is a good thing, make it a family activity.
Children’s Dentistry in the Office
Around the time of their second birthdays, Dr. Lindsey will want to start seeing your children in the office. We like to call their first visit a Happy Visit, a time to get acquainted with us and the sights and sounds in a dentist’s office. At their first checkup, we’ll carefully examine each tooth and assess their gum health. We’ll also look for any signs of tooth decay.
At some point, Dr. Lindsey will likely recommend a fluoride treatment and dental sealants. Fluoride is a mineral that strengthens teeth’s enamel, making them better able to fend off decay-causing bacteria. Dental sealants are applied to your children’s molars and provide a solid barrier between their teeth and the acids that cause decay.
